Omaha is another variation of the poker card game, also called Omaha Holdem and Omaha Hi it usually played with 2-10 players round a table.  If you already understand Texas Holdem you will learn how to play Omaha poker in no time as the games are very similar. The game consists of four “hole cards” or personal face down cards and five community cards that everyone gets to see and use. Each player needs to use two of their hole cards and three of the community cards to make up the best possible hand.

Starting off a game of Omaha Poker

The game is started by the player sat left of the dealer who posts a small blind, the player sat next to that then makes a big blind bet. These big and small blinds vary depending on the game been played. After the blinds have been placed the hole cards are dealt out to each player, four face down cards each.

Now the betting starts.

Unless you have placed a blind bet there are different rounds of betting with one at each stage of the game, one at each stage - “the flop”, “the turn”, “the river” and “the showdown”.  The betting always starts with the player seated to the left of big blind. Players have the option to call the big blind (match it), raise it (increase the bet) or fold their cards and drop out of the hand, this betting then continues clockwise around the table until all of the players have folded, raised or called and agreed on the pot amount. After “the flop” players can also “check” the cards if none of the other players have made a bet.

The Flop:

After the first betting round is concluded the players who are still in the pot get to see “the flop”, in poker terminology this is the action of the first community cards to be dealt out, the cards are dealt out face up in to the middle of the table and can be used by all of the players. At this point the hands are starting to shape up and people start to bet a bit more. The flop can also indicate the start of the second round of betting.

The Turn:

As soon as the second betting round is over the 4th communal card is dealt out on to the table for everyone to see. This is known as “the turn” card and also brings on another round of betting.

The River:

After the round of betting has been completed the dealer deals out the 5th and final community card. In poker terminology this is called “the River”. The players who are still in the hand, continue to bet until the person who has bet the highest is called and a showdown is forced.

Once a showdown is called, all players reveal the best five-card hand they can make. Once the winner has been declared and all chips are picked up, the deal advances to the player to the left of the dealer of the previous hand and it starts all over again.
